No Department / Division / Shop : Repair / R-6 / 72B Comments: The thing I remember most was the relentless work schedule for divers, constantly being called in at night & on weekends to do previously unscheduled dive jobs. I worked so many nights and weekends that I had to keep pictures of my wife and daughter at work so I wouldn't forget what they looked like. One winter, beginning on Christmas Eve, I worked nine weeks straight without a single entire day off. The only reason it ended at nine weeks is because I had a signed and approved request chit for a Saturday off! The Holland divers worked hard and played hard - maybe a little too hard at times, but with that work pace you have to blow off steam somehow. Despite the exhaustive work pace, I did have a lot of fun working and hanging out with some great shipmates. It still brings a smile to my face! I learned a lot there, earned my Surface Warfare designation, and lost a finger there. Some of my best and worst memories of my Navy career came from the USS Holland and I served there with some of the best and worst people I encountered in the Navy.

Also spent a few years in the Naval Reserves as an MA2 assigned to Combat Zone Field Hospital CBTZ-15 in the Gulf during GW1.

No Department / Division / Shop : W-2, W-4, W-6 and Shore Patrol, Cardwell Bay Comments: More than thirty years on from my time on the Holland, I still sometimes wake up in the middle of the night convinced that I forgot to check the Plan of the Day and I'm very late for my JOOD mid-watch. I don't have glowing memories of the time I spent on either the Holland or the Hunley. I still think that the middle of the Holy Loch was a pretty God-awful place to work at times. But my years at Site One were a very important period of my life, not least because the time I spent there resulted in me remaining in Scotland after my discharge in 1984. ...And that eventually led to my current life in Italy with a Dutch wife and daughter born in 2008.

We had to make a stop in Charleston SC. We spent a few weeks there, if my memory serves me. But during our stay there. A challenge was put out to those of us in OPS to play a football game. The challenge was from another department. Next thing we know, we are playing the entire crew. I remember sick bay had a few visitors that day. Including me, separated shoulder on the last play of the game.
