We had the best times of our lives plus the bad good and ugley almost striking the cooper river bridge for we scared the hell out of the people up their you remember them blowing their horn and yelling come on we need a new bridge, also having to lug all that stuf aboard for the north atalintic tried the best to test how much we could roll breaking all the trophy glass cases and we had to send them to deep six, the watch that lasted all night on main deck lasted to the bulk head those waves come to as to wash you over but the give you a kiss then roll away the inspection in Rota by CNO I gave the sheet metal shop

Wow, memories come flooding back. I made a lot of important mistakes in Guam. I also have very fond memories of everyone on board. I still have dreams about my Navy days in Guam. Living in an Octagon house on a golf course...lot of parties in that house. To buying my Guam "bomb" for 500 bucks! I remember driving that thing until the brakes fell off and I had to stop with the emergency brake hahaha. I learned how to surf there, made my first real purchase of a car, a beautiful red Nissan Sentra that I wrecked 2 days after...UGH. All the different beautiful ports we visited...throwing up in Korea on the liberty boat because I had too many double shots of tequila...BTW thanks for not rating me out!! Singapore, Hong Kong, Kowloon MAD DOGS...loved that place! Wow and Japan too!! I remember meeting up with ship in Sasebo Japan. So HUGE and overwhelming, I remember walking up to it thinking what did I get myself into hahaha Does anyone remember the Jungle!!!! Wet Willies played a lot of beach volleyball there. Anyone remember Kool World that alternative club?? Gosh so many memories had a ton of friends. Hope all is well my fellow shipmates and I will always miss driving her. I miss Conn has the Conn hahahaha You all have a special place in my heart.

The hottest place on the ship in port or out to sea. The hardest work on the ship hands down. Loved every minute of it. Should have stayed to Decom her.

Dear AS-32, I recently purchased the 40UB8321 which is the AS-2-2 utility boat, I believe this boat used to be "attached" to your vessel. When we started sanding the hull, we could see the outline of the word HOLLAND. I purchased her from a salvage guy in Del Rio ,Texas. I don't know how he came upon the boat. But she is now safe and sound, and will spend her final years languishing in the Hudson, as a pleasure craft. The old Detroit Diesel is in fine shape, and I will try to restore her. Let me know what additional info, or background you can give me. It sounds like you and your mates and this ship have a fine Naval history. I can't wait to hear more about it. Mark

Serving on the USS Holland was a definitely an experience. coming from the USS Proteus AS-19 which whad an all male crew except for a few officers. It was my first time serving on a ship with women. I remember a couple guys got in trouble for blacking out the first L in Holland on their ball caps. I'll let y'all figure out what that made it say. Lol

Comments:
I went aboard Holland in 1969 right out of boot camp.  I was scared when I climbed that brow.  I of course was put in mess cooking and was assigned to the scullery.  After about 2 weeks I was talking to one of the guys in there and I told him that I was a licensed barber.  He took me to the crews barbershop and introduced me to the guys working in there.  From then on I did my mess cooking time in the barbershop cutting mess cooks hair.  Then after my mess cooking time I stayed in the shop.  Being the low man on the totem pole in there, I had to swab the lobby that was outside the shop every morning and evening.  When I made 3rd class I was still the low man, I swabbed that lobby for a long time.  I did get a break for a while, being the only real barber on the ship I was sent up to the Officer's shop by request of the CO.  My duty was duty driver.  I enjoyed that cause I got to get a Spanish driver's license and got to drive to Seville airport to pick up supplies for the ships store.  I got an apartment in town with 3 other guys.  It was on the beach and we had some great times.  We loved those bars and girls.  I had some great friends there.  We had a sign-up sheet posted on the barbershop door and each barber had a column on it where you could sign for a particular barber you wanted to cut your hair.  When we would get really plastered the night before, my friends would come and sign up under my name but wouldn't show up, that way I could recover from my hangover......lol.....great times....Larry.
