Comments:
Dear AS-32, I recently purchased the 40UB8321 which is the AS-2-2 utility boat, I believe this boat used to be "attached" to your vessel. When we started sanding the hull, we could see the outline of the word HOLLAND. I purchased her from a salvage guy in Del Rio ,Texas. I don't know how he came upon the boat. But she is now safe and sound, and will spend her final years languishing in the Hudson, as a pleasure craft. The old Detroit Diesel is in fine shape, and I will try to restore her. Let me know what additional info, or background you can give me. It sounds like you and your mates and this ship have a fine Naval history. I can't wait to hear more about it. Mark

Great memories from my time on the USS Holland!  Went on the cruise to Diego Garcia and through the Panama Canel!  I have some pictures from that time.  I will figure out how to scan them and share them on one of the websites!

I do not have the monies to pay for membership. Would someone be willing to 'Connect on LinkedIn'? I also noticed the submarines serviced list was incomplete. I happen to remember we also tended the USS Chicago along with a few others.

Serving on the USS Holland was a definitely an experience. coming from the USS Proteus AS-19 which whad an all male crew except for a few officers. It was my first time serving on a ship with women. I remember a couple guys got in trouble for blacking out the first L in Holland on their ball caps. I'll let y'all figure out what that made it say. Lol

Comments:
I went aboard Holland in 1969 right out of boot camp.  I was scared when I climbed that brow.  I of course was put in mess cooking and was assigned to the scullery.  After about 2 weeks I was talking to one of the guys in there and I told him that I was a licensed barber.  He took me to the crews barbershop and introduced me to the guys working in there.  From then on I did my mess cooking time in the barbershop cutting mess cooks hair.  Then after my mess cooking time I stayed in the shop.  Being the low man on the totem pole in there, I had to swab the lobby that was outside the shop every morning and evening.  When I made 3rd class I was still the low man, I swabbed that lobby for a long time.  I did get a break for a while, being the only real barber on the ship I was sent up to the Officer's shop by request of the CO.  My duty was duty driver.  I enjoyed that cause I got to get a Spanish driver's license and got to drive to Seville airport to pick up supplies for the ships store.  I got an apartment in town with 3 other guys.  It was on the beach and we had some great times.  We loved those bars and girls.  I had some great friends there.  We had a sign-up sheet posted on the barbershop door and each barber had a column on it where you could sign for a particular barber you wanted to cut your hair.  When we would get really plastered the night before, my friends would come and sign up under my name but wouldn't show up, that way I could recover from my hangover......lol.....great times....Larry.

I am searching for the cwo2 who ran the r-3 division. I found chief deaton in summerville south Carolina and waren brookshire  and billy jack gage and i hear Chief  voshell off the hunley ius there as well.
I had the best times of my life aboard the Holland . For me the guys were like family. If any of you search for david Heintz he died about 5 years ago of lou garricks disease or from something from the asbestos. many of our ships mates passed on. Sorry to hear they are gone will miss them.
I seek Al quarta  if he is still alive.
I  am seeking the ships roster from 1971 to 1973 if anyone might have a copy
I have a few pics if anyone wants copies, these I got from Bruce Hughes  who was also in the r 3 division
to those i served with , I salute you. who has pics of the sangria shack in rota? I have a couple pics  of a couple bars that don't exist any more. spme of my ship mates I am ashamed to say are ship mates. warren brookshire took blacks off me  whilethey were beating tyhe hell out of me on another ship the hunley then refusedto admit the incident took place after my head was caved in  . That's not whati calla loyal ship mate and it was all kept quiet within the division.Dont worry it didn't happen ion the Holland  that was the Hunley as 31  that ship suckked

I sailed from Norfolk, Va on the USS Holland and entered Holy Loch Scotland in November, 1981. My wife and 4 children joined me in the early Spring of 1976. We spent a short time at the Ardtully B&B, before moving into an apartment in Waverly Court. Eventually we moved to Sandbank. Of all the duty stations during my 20 year career, Scotland was enjoyed the most and my wife has always said that is the one place she would like to return to for a visit.
We met a lot of nice people there and we enjoyed playing darts at the CPO club and we still stay in touch with Fritz and Sandy Cunningham.
