Comments: Worked in the Disbursing Office. I was 18 years old and The WGT was the best duty station ever. Fish and Chips. The taxi ride back to the ship after chasing all the Scottish Lasses. The horizontal rain walking down the pier to the liberty boats. Going to Glasgow and Edinburgh. What a great life experience. Went back with the wife in 1995 and all the military was gone. Still Dunoon was very charming and we were very welcomed. Lifetime memories.
Comments: Had a great time over there. Bit too much partying, but have some good memories. Heading back over there in Sept to visit. Any of the old 3rd division flying squad members out there?
Comments: I remember our trip to Rota from Charleston. After the third day at sea, we hit a storm. Tried to maneuver around it and it kept following us. We lost several boats from the boat deck. I've never experienced such a storm. I remember sitting on the galley floor to eat and the food and drinks kept sliding back and forth. I remember stopping in Lisbon and Holland prior to getting to Rota. I'll never trade my days on the USS Holland. May she rest in peace. Great bunch of sailors to be with.
Comments: I became a Shellback on this baby on May 31, 1983. Was on board the beginning of 1983 to early 1984. Found out I was pregnant and they put me on shore duty at the Charleston Naval Station in the Pier Services department, docking & undocking ships till I got out in September 1986. I was a QM3 on board and I loved it. Went through the Suez and Panama Canals, spent time in GITMO (could have done without that one) and spent three months anchored out in Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. Met the father of my son (now also in the US Navy) on board, although we're now divorced. Haven't heard from too many of my shipmates and hope with this page, that will change. I would love to hear from anyone in the OPS Division or anyone else on board at that time too.
Comments: I really enjoyed my tour despite having the toughest OPS/NAV and a challenging and broken radio room.
Comments: Great Ship and Good Ship Mates.
Comments: The day I reported for duty. My division was moving MK-48's and someone did not lock down a skid, the ship listed and the torp went belly-up. With that said, it was the best ship I have been attached to.
Comments: Great ship
Comments: I was the night and day Mess Decks MAA. Thru the yards and Hugo. I transfered to The Alamogordo and retired in 93. If you remember me drop me a line a lot has happened the last 16 years. Changed wives, gained 3 step daughters and managed to come up with 4 grandchildren. Together we have 7. Not to bad for an old fart! Sorry I can't make the reunion, had a bad few months an recovering from cancer of the larynx. Can't whistle worth spit! Fair winds and following seas to those who have sailed the Holland before and since I was on board.
Comments: So glad we have such a strong organization, have found my friend, DK1 Molina that rode our ship during homeport change from Charleston SC to Apra Harbor Guam, 1992, she retired right after the change, and I was transferred to Site III, Polaris PT Guam. I Retired 1 Mar 1993, great party had by all attending at Andy's Hut, with my Dad, Evans F. Bell, and spouse, Jeffrey Rasmussen in attendance on Jan 8, 1993. the great folks at the American Legion post offered up a great Guam barbeque, and a cake from the First class mess was available, still have the great pics from this event. Ya'll taker easy, if money pulls through hope to attend reunion, try for east coast next year ifn i can't make it. have to be in Minneapolis MN, May 23,2009 for her graduation with Bachelor's degree, so travel dollars are spoken for this year. great web site as always...........taker easy, DC1 Sherry Rasmussen.
Comments: Lota of great memories from the Holland.
Comments: The Holland was my second tour in the Holy Loch. When I left the Navy and Holland in 1979, I remained in Scotland. I am still here and still enjoy the Scottish environment as much now as when I first arrived. There are many good friends from the time on the Holland through to the present day. I still have some photographs of Lord Mountbatten from his presentation of the Battenburg Cup to the Holland.
Comments: Enjoyed area around Rota andup the coast. Working on the boats. Trip back to the states with stopover at Glassco Scotland. And then enjoyed Charleston Area.
Comments: I enjoyed and value my tour on the Holland because of the important job the ship and crew were accomplishing. The FBM submarines the Holland tended were an important leg of the triad that protected the United States as well as the rest of the free world during the dangerous cold war days. I was privileged to have two tours in the Holy Loch, first on the Hunley and then on the Holland. During my 21 years in the Navy, I was in the Pacific on board ship and oversea shore duty. The tours in Scotland were the best of all my oversea duty. Work was hard on board ship, but liberty was great. I had many Scottish friends and still am very involved in the Scottish culture here at home.
Comments: greetings to all of my friends that served on the WGT. I spent 8 yrs in shop 38 (1965-1973). went to shore duty 73-75. returned to the WGT in 75 and went back to shop 38 until late 77 when I was reassigned to P&E. stayed there until early 79 when i was reassigned to repair departments QA division where i stayed until transfered in 1980. The WGT had in my entire time on board great officers, great chiefs and best of all great enlisted personnel that helped make the WGT the ship/home that she was. thomas (TJ) lacasse, MMCS USNavy (1960-1984) retired
Comments: I started out in 3rd Div. then went mess crank duties after all that, I went to 2nd Div. then on to 1st. Div. After I made BM3 I was sent back to 2nd Div. I headed out to NAS Pensacola right after hurricane Hugo in late 89. There are several friends from Deck I still keep in touch with. I reflect back on those days and wish I would of done things a little different, I wished that I would of got addresses and contact information from as many as my friends as I could. I catch myself thinking about those days in my youth and the impact that serving on the Holland made on me. The Holland was more than a workplace to me it was home for a long time. To me, the people I called friend on the ship we more than friends and more like family, I loved my friends on there and I cared deeply for everyone I did get to know on the ship.
Comments: I have the greatest memories of The Holland and the men I served with, great times and great people. Rota still has a special place in my heart and always will. Would love to hear from my shipmates. I remember overhauling all the main engines, preparing for her return to Charleston and I also remember the sad day we left Rota. Serving aboard the Holland made my 4 years in the navy a truly great time and the engineering department was the best duty ever.
Comments: I reported to Site 1 1981 and left the Holland Oct 1983. I stayed in the Reserves until retiring Oct 2008. I am fortunate to have served on board Holland. That experience of working hard and having pride in your work served me well through out my Navy career. It was interesting to see so many changes take place over the years. I also served on the USS Frank Cable (AS-40) in Guam. It was good times, but it wasn’t the Holland! Oh how, I miss the good old days! I’m always looking for old Ship Mates from the “Holland Days”
Comments: Reporting to Ingalls Shipyard in Pascagoula as a member of the nucleus crew in March '63, I worked with MR1 Don Callis and ET3 Fred Chapman to build the half-hull model of the Holland and the tended SSBN alongside while the ship itself was under construction. I also designed the ship's original patch. When the ship was moved to Charleston, for final fitting out and commissioning, I, with other members of the nucleus crew taught "school of the ship" classes to other precom crew members to acquaint them with features of the Holland. After commissioning, we were welded into a crew during RefTra in Guantanamo. Upon arrival in Rota, we were kept busy tending our squadron of "boats". The NavShop had great leadership, as many of our senior petty officers had converted from other rates, but to a man, this was fine collection of hard working sailors. This crew and their work ethic was probably responsible for my decision to make a career out of the Navy.' My wife and I truly enjoyed our time in Rota, where we lived on the local economy, our daughter was born, and we got to know many of the locals. We cherished our travels to Seville, Gibraltar, and the many small towns in the Andulusian region of Spain. I have many fond memories of this wonderful ship, the original crew, and the many friends we made during this tour. Rod Kent, Lcdr, USN Ret
