I worked in operations/communications on the DSTE system.  It was a great 2 years, but left the Navy in July 1974.  Stayed in Charleston and met my sweet wife there in 1977.

My first and only duty station while in the Navy, grew from a boy to a man while there, seemed like hell while I was there but looking back it was some of the best time's of my life! Met some of the best (and most real) friends of my life while there. Just wish I would have stayed in touch with more of them! Still looking for some. I wouldn't take anything for my memories of her!

This was my first ship and a wonderful one she was. I had my good times and bad on her. My time on her made me grow up and take notice of what it was to be a shell back and Navy team player, there was a place for fun aboard The Holland and A time to be serious. Capt. Young sure knew when that was and I found out the hard way. To see this bulletin makes me proud and yet sad that she is at peace and not haze gray and underway.

Had my best time in Navy stationed on the Holland. Also was attached to Canopus & Simon Lake. I was a Dental Tech. I remember my scariest moment cleaning Captain Steel's teeth. Then I was a E-2. I was so afraid I would hurt him. What would he do to me. My hands were shaking so bad. I think that in it's self did a good job cleaning. He turned out to be a nice guy.

One of my favorite purks was getting to eat chow first and lots of leftovers whenever we wanted them. Us medics always enjoyed that privilege.

I remember Our trip to Rota in late March of 1969(maybe first week of April). Around 3 days out we caught a big storm. We did lots of rolls(20+ degrees). Through me out of my rack. We lost a few small boats in the storm, plus a lot of various damage. Have not been through anything like that since.
I think upgrading to twin boat and missile cranes saved us. That old single rotator may have been bad news for us.

On the way to Rota, we stopped in Lisbon. Had a good time there. Transferred to Canopus and came back to Bremerton.

None better than the crew of The Holland.

I have to hand it to the USS HOLLAND Repair Department, they did it all and in fine style.  Of course they could not have done that without the support of all the other departments.Quite a change when I reported to a state side tender and it seemed like about 1/2 of the work orders were being farmed out to a civilian contractor!

I did enjoy my tour on board HOLLAND, but dare say it was very demanding at time, but all in all, my memories of the USS HOLLAND are all good ones.

I wish all my HOLLAND and other Navy shipmates nothing but fair winds and following seas!!

Brings back both good and bad memories.  Not much for a Signalman to do on a sub tender.  Idle hands are the devils tools, you know.

Spain was terrific, I would love to retun there someday.

My first duty station was the Holland in Holy Loch.  I spent my whole time on the old girl.  Would love to make one of the reunions in the future.  I just finished hanging all my pics and certificate from the ship in my office.  I can't believe how many of my co-workers that come in just to look at everything.  Its been almost 25 years since I left the Navy but I think of all the friends and all the fun I had on the Holland.

I came aboard during the overhaul in Charleston Shipyard and was transferred off upon returning to Charleston after the World Cruise. It was the strangest two years of my career, having just come from Submarines and had no idea how the Surface Navy operated.

I'd like to be able to contact some of my shipmates from W6, especially Doug Campbell, so I could say Cónus tá tú, a Dhúglas - Tá mé ag foghlaim Gaeilge, fos.
