Comments: I have memories that I will never forgot thanks to being stationed on the Holland. And for those who know me, yes Kyiah and I are still best friends and live near each other.
Comments: Enjoyed the 2009 Reunion and especially the visit to the Suison Bay resting place for AS-32, AS-12, BB-61 and HMB-1 with Sea Shadow. Strongly encourage the Association Officers to write everyone we can find who has anything to do with disposition of AS-32 to keep us informed as any changes occur in her status. It would be most expensive to find and maintain a home for AS-32 but that would be a neat project. Is there an association for AS-3 or SS-1 that might join us in finding a home for AS-32? Keith
Comments: Great ship and great shipmates. Great times in both places. Had nice apartment in Rota. Roommates were Tommy McGuire from NY and Ron Quiglia from Pittsburgh. There were much worse places to be stationed in those years!!
Comments: Not my best times but definately growing times.
Comments: The first and only duty station I had. Goose Creek was a nice place. I'm not sure what the real Navy was like, but I loved the time I spent on the Holland. All we did was fish, go to the beach or play softball. I made contact with some of the people I worked with, but always looking for more.
Comments: Looking forward to hearing from shipmates from Guam. Great time there, but was ready to come home when I retired in '93
Comments: I enjoyed the duty on the Holland, I was in the forward engine rm. from 1963 to 1967. During that tour of duty my wife and I had two daughters born at Rota, Left the Holland in 1967 for inst. duty at ENA School Great Lakes, Ill. Came back aboard the Holland in 1970 and was in the Boat Shop for about a year, then assigned to the 3M office with EN1 Pat Smith. Left the Holland in 1974 for Recruiting Duty in Rome, NY. Both my wife and Daughters enjoyed Spain and Charleston, SC.
Comments: i volunteered to go to nam but they sent to rota for the best 3 years of my life.had a lot of good times.would like to go back and walk around rota for a couple of days.it has really changed,go on google earth and see.where i used to live looks a lot different.there is some real long structures in chipiona.i would guess they are fish farms or greenhouses or something.i found out something kind of interesting about that town by accident not to long ago.if you lived in rota you would be a little surprised and say to yourself hmmmm.
Comments: I was short-toured on my shore duty tour in 1976 to return to Holy Loch. I started out as the R-2 Division Officer and then as the PMA. I had previously served on Canopus as the R-2 Division Officer. In 1977 I was transferred to the Squadron and my office was on board Holland where I stayed until my retirement in 1978, so you might say I was on board from 1976-1978. My family and I had some great times in Scotland and my wife and I attended a Site one reunion in Dunoon a couple of years ago. My oldest daughter, Donna, married a fellow shipmate, Carl Spraberry, HT2 and my youngest daughter ,Madeline, married a local guy, John Smith.
Comments: Join the Navy and see the world. Boy, what an understatement. I took my leave and traveled around seeing all of Europe and a good portion of North and Western Africa. It was the opportunity of a lifetime and I took full advantage of it. I had a beautiful home on Calle Gandia, next to the Bar Playa and lived the life of Riley. I miss all my Spanish friends and the great times I had blending in with the local color. Work wasn't bad either, diving everyday under those boomers. Chief Nelson and the other divers taught me a lot. A great bunch of guys to serve with. It sure beat going to Viet Nam. I must be one of the luckiest guys alive. I wish all my shipmates the best.
Comments: I remember the fun times I had and meeting new friends which was always. I will also always remember our home port change from Charleston to Guam which was an incredible journey. What fun it was! I also remember when we crossed the International Date Line...It was on my birthday, and I missed my 23rd birthday totally because we skipped a day...my friends picked me up, made me laugh, and we celebrated in Hawaii...I wouldn't change a thing. God Bless to you all wherever you all may be. If I could do it all over again, I would. I miss you all...
Comments: Are there any of my old shipmates out there?
Comments: HARD CHARGING BUNCH, DRANK A LOT, OH TO BE YOUNG AGAIN. DROPPED AN EXERCISE TORPEODO ONCE NOT GOOD, ON OUR SPARE TIME DUTY DAYS PLAYED CARDS. AFTER A THREE DAY SEA DUTY CRUSE I WAS STANDING THE RAIL WITH A FRIEND, PERRY, WHEN HE SAID "LOOK AT ALL THOSE LIFER WIVES WAITING ON THE PIER". I SAID "WELL LOOK AGAIN THOSE ARE OUR WIVES WAITING THERE." I WAS AN E-4 WHILE ON BOARD AND RETIRED JAN. 1993 A TMC FROM ACTIVE RESERVE DUTY. I LIKED CHARLESTON SC. REAL WELL AND HAVE GONE BACK FOR VACATIONS. I KNOW WHERE THE PIRATE IS BURIED. I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO ATTENDING FUTURE REUNIONS.
Comments: Just looking to talk with old shipmates.
Comments: Reported on-board after de-commissioning\cross-decking from USS Proteus (AS-19) worked down in personnel office.
Comments: I came aboard in 1971 and My brother Kevin came in 1972 he was a bmsn in Rota we served on board together until bremerton, he got out I served until I was cross decked on to the USS Canopus. I was a bowler and went by the nick name gabby. I remember Goldworthy Spivey and alot of weapons department people. I am retired now and work for defense contractor in Maryland
Comments: Anyway. Spent some time onboard, not much but remember getting the ship ready for its Scotland Deployment. When we pulled alongside the Canopus, I was surprised to be presented with an offer to crossdeck with someone who wanted to stay in Scotland. Wound up traversing the Atlantic again on the Canopus. Would like to hear from anyone who remembers me. Sometimes I forget myself. I remember dropping the Missile flange onboard a boomer, during the transition. I also recall Flatter and Spivey and Trosper.
Comments: I guess I woud have to say some of the best years of my life were spent aboard the Holland .Made alot of good friends I will never forget .And alot of good memories Sometimes I wish I could go back and do it all over again.
Comments: Without a doubt, the best four years of my navy career I spent on the Holland.
