Comments: looking for shipmate c
Comments: Only MR in the M&A Division. Loved the wild ride to Rota. Had the opportunity to work for some good CPO's, Sandy, Dye, and my old buddy, Beecroft. Had good times partying with Walltella and Mendenhall in Charleston and Rota. If anyone knows of Chief Beecroft's where-abouts, let me know. God Bless Sgt Fred Nigh of our Marine detachment killed in Nam Sept 69'. Rest in Peace good buddy!
Comments: I spent my entire enlistment on the Holland except for a short stint on the USS Fulton in the Mediterranean. I was a Electricians Mate and did alot of rewinding motors in R3 division. My wife and I enjoyed our time in both Rota and Charleston.....would love to return to Spain to see what it is like 35+ years later.
Comments: Was EN2 at commissioning, worked in Fwd Eng Rm. Made EN1 and went to Aft Eng Rm. The first ride to Rota was a good one, we were ready to blow the crane over the side when it broke loose during a storm. Don't remember which person it was that was finally able to get a chain on it during a very brief lull but he deserves a medal. Last 48 hrs of that transit were at flank speed due to a death of crew members wife back in Charleston. Got to Rota breakwater where a tug met us to take him off to a waiting plane for flight back to Charleston. Lots of fond memories of Holland. Remember that the NS Savannah came to Rota at least twice in place of the normal AKA re-supply.
Comments: My first Duty station. Sailed to Guam and loved every minute on board. Made a lot of amazing friends. It was an awesome journey! Would love to hear from some old friends from there.

Comments: Well looking back after all these years being in Scotland from 1977-1981 was probably the best time of my life. Youth might have had something to do with that not to mention a copius selection of young lassies. (ITS TRUE). I really miss some of them to. Seriously if you were there during that time you know what I mean. I think that time period had to be the best, and yes Ethington you did cut my hair. You were the best barber the ship had. The Discos were raucous with Saturday Night Fever music blaring out of P.J's and other local spots. We also had our home grown Country and Western band with Petty Officer Peoples heading up the group. There was also a great cook on board named Bob Toole who married a local girl. I was with him when he met her and they are still married to this day. Her name was Christine. I have so many memories of Scotland I can't get them all down today, but if you were there during that period we had a bond that held us together being so far from that states and working our asses off together. The Holland truly was the World's Greatest Tender, and the people that served on it made it so. |
