Comments: Enjoyed my tour on the Holland and the country up until I was cut at the Glen Kern.
Comments: Had a great time in Scotland. Lots of TC jobs kept us very busy. Wonderful country to visit and would love to return with the wife someday. I got off while in Diego on the E5 early out program. Loved working on the boats up in the sail. Wouldn't trade it for any other life experience.
Comments: Worked on Nav computers the size of refrigerators. Also alignment of periscopes.
Comments: Just looking to get in touch with Navy/Marine Personnal that I served with during my time onboard. Or any crew members from my area, which is, Bellingham WA. I wish you all the best and hope you find this in good health.
Comments: THE "WORLDS GREATEST TENDER" AS STATED BY XO CDR LINDSEY BECAME A FACT. LONG HOURS OF WORK LIVING IN A COUNTRY THAT WAS 50 YEARS BEHIND TIME HE EMPHASIZED PRIDE AND PROFESSIONALISM. CAPT WIGGLEY BACKED THAT IDEA AND THE CREW RESPONDED. WE WERE THE BEST AMERICANS THAT EVER STEPED FOOT ON SCOTTISH SOIL. I WORKED FOR CWO M.A.ROSSI HE TOOK PRIDE IN THE SHIP AND HIS PEOPLE. HE WAS AN ASS TO WORK FOR BUT IN LATER YEARS I LEARNED HIS METHODS PROVED TO BE RIGHT. I'M PROUD TO HAVE SERVED ON SUCH A COMMAND. LT. BARRY J. SHARP USN RET.

Comments: Spent 11 months in Scotland. I remember hearing "we are working TC (Til Complete) alot. We busted our asses getting the subs an operating BRA-8 buoy.
Comments: Damn ship about turned me into an alcoholic. Long days and longer nites. It sure made my decision to get out easy. Did have some great times with Phil, Rodney and crew.
Comments: Never forgot the trip from Charleston, S.C. to Amsterdam, Holland in 1968, when we weathered a hurricane that produced waves that rolled the ship close to it's maximum. The captain had his hand on the crane detonenator ready to blow it if we took a 45 degree roll. We took 3 successive rolls at 44 degrees. The captains personal sailboat was lashed to the deck on the starboard side just below the crane. If he blew the crane, he would have lost his boat too. I started my assignment in the 38 shop. I went to A/C & R school in Norfolk, VA, I was an EN2 later assigned to the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Shop located starboard side of the machine shop. I remember two men who lost their legs to parting lines in Rota, Spain. I was personally involved in helping to apply a tourniqet to the deck hand who lost his leg to a parting houser at the stern when the XO gave the engine command "ahead" before the lines were cleared from the pier ballards. The other incident was at the bow during an anchor deployment when the anchor was dropped.
Comments: It's been a while and a few of the crew mates are no longer with us. Been looking for Mark Pagels 75 - 77- not on the web anywhere. Rumor that George Yesgosh passed away. |
