Comments: just wanted to see old friends
Comments: hi to steam gen. team
Comments: I was an SKC select off USS Alamos AFDB-7 TAD to CSS-14 Supply Dept/ USS Canopus AS-34 for cross deck to USS Holland AS-32 upon arrival in the Loch. SKC Hall went to US with USS Canopus AS-34 the "Real SubSat Chief". Delayed freeze on Chief's promotion until after transfer I was "welcomed to goat locker by Holland's Chief's !! USS Holland AS-32 set the standard for Automated Supply Inventory Location and accuracy counts consolidated 4 or more multiple locations and effectiveness at 98% taught at Supply Corps School as the example for how to do it; as tender C well into the late eighties. I retired like many of the enlisted on Holland, AFTER this period at a much higher rank as the officers over us did also, and that leads me to remember X.O. Lindsay who was every sailor's sailor. I will never forget his leadership and full support for the men of all divisions; providing the standards of positive attitude. I hope the FN he gave a piggyback ride around the gym at E Div party to gain his respect; writes in the log about that event...known ship wide. X.O. said he'd do anything to get the ship's morale up after their yard period and arrival in Holy Loch to relieve Canopus. X.O Lindsay relieved our X.O. God rest his soul. He was a great military mentor for me personally. To the men that made me a better Chief and Senior Chief select, not to mention LDO thank each of you all of SubSat and LPO SK1 Bill Eash at the time, and his crew. I left S6 to have Lt Turpie now retired Capt.SC, USN my S1 boss, SK1 John Ruditis, Rickey Boss, and their crews each and everyone set the records for Holland, Chief Larry Shields another ole Hoosier and his Stock Control Officer whom put the whole supply dept. team together to set these records. We may be dinosaur storekeeps and suppos but we still hold the record since tenders really don't exist any longer, nor SK's God Bless you' all' !
Comments: I HAD A GOOD TIME IN ROTA. HELLO TO ALL MY OLD BUDDIES. HANGOVERS HURT MORE THAN THEY USE TO !!
Comments: I thought at the time it was the worst place ever. Now I MISS that ship and place sooo much.
Comments: fish & chips wrapped in newspaper...... with a little salt & vinegar......... I can still smell it.
Comments: This was the 7th ship I was on during my 13 years in the Naval Reserve and by far the best. The crew was great and the ship was a gem. I remember walking sideways down the passage way before they changed the boat and missile Crane to two smaller cranes. And there was nothing like the smell of the paper mill in the morning! I started out as Log Room Yeoman and ended in the Photo Lab. Hope to hear from you soon.
Comments: I would like to visit the ship and would like to know if she is available to see? Also would love to purchase any patch or hats.
Comments: Uss Holland was one of my favorite commands. The 67B crew were awesome. Never forget the deployed nites out hanging with 67B- Willie, Duckie, Baker, Gergely , Brantley Lyles and her crew! Miss you guys still!
Comments: Proud to be one of the crewmembers of the 'WGT' in Merry Ole Scotland. Most difficult ,yet most rewarding tour during 30 year career. Fond memories of walking down the pier, dodging horizontal rain drops and our 'half day' work day (the first 12 hours). The memories of a strong and wonderful relationship with the locals and outings at the Queen Hall are especially cherished. We thought XO Gene Lindsey was out in la-la-la land at the thought of the HOLLAND being the 'WGT', based on her past record. Thanks to the crewmembers for stepping up to the plate and developing a organization which lives on today wherever there is a crewmember of the USS HOLLAND the 'WORLD'S GREATEST TENDER'.
Comments: Wish i could go back to those times. Excellent duty.
Comments: She was a great ship and a fine crew. I remember the beautiful water off Gitmo, the missile deck cracking and opening and closing like a clam during the Bay of Biscay winter crossing, missing a 1965 and 1969 USO girls entertainment troop with Rota pier watches both times, I remember General Franco across the steam line from me as I did my welcome aboard, be a mess cook duty, and so much more. Friends made then are thankfully still friends today.
