Comments: Visited the Nautilus museum in Groton recently and was reminded of my days there attending sub school and subsequent tour of duty on the Holland. The couple of years I spent on board were some of the best times of my life.
Comments: I began my association with the Holland on the pre-comissioning crew in Norfolk, Va. We attended a series of training classes while waiting for the ship to arrive in Charleston, SC. During the shakedown cruise I worked on the ship's mess area. Then I was transfered to the sheetmetal shop. Once ready for sea, we sailed to Rota Spain. I was on board in Rota for over 1 year before returning states side. It is disappointing to see the photos of the ship now in "mothballs." It has been allowed to deteriorate and fall into an unkempt appearance. Photos can be seen at the following web site for those who are interested. news.yahoo.com Read the article 'Haunting images of old warships' on the news blog the Upshot on Yahoo! News. Scores of floating ships are attracting attention as they decompose in a California bay. The vessels served in multiple wars, but now look like deserted ghost towns. Comments: I miss the liberty ports and the people I worked with. I miss the hum of the ship and the rocking of the boat.....It was the best sleep ever. I appreciate making a few lifetime friends on there. I'm still in the Navy and am stationed at Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune. Where has all the time gone? Shoot me an email if you remember me.
Comments: Was not aboard very long but enjoyed the time I spent on her. Was on the initial Shake down cruise. Pulled my first real liberty on that cruise. Quite an experience for a young kid of 18 yrs, also got my first butt chewing by the leading QM . I learned not to clean the coffee pot before making a fresh pot. Good memories Left the Holland and went aboard the Petrel ASR-14.
Comments: What ever happened to the USS HOLLAND after we shut off the engines in Bremerton, Washington? We heard rumor that it was being sold to one of the Asian navies. Charles P. Russo
Comments: Salutations to all! I was a snipe in the forward engine room and never worked so hard in my life! M-Div really earned their keep and would not always get liberty when we pulled into port due to equipment issues, etc. The heat would get up to about 140 sometimes due to those antique Fairbanks diesels, evaps and boilers we had down there! Since we rarely left the engine room underway, we would only know we were back in SC by the smell of the paper mills coming through the air vents. You know you work in a tough place when they send people down to the engine room for punishment! I remember paper-pushers taking hollywoood showers when we were rationing potable water and no one was allowed to take a UA shower; the Master at Arms would bring them down to stand a evap watch to impress upon them how much work goes into making water onboard! Ha-Ha! We had a good, hardworking crew and had alot of laughs down there even though we often worked 6 on and 6 off, went through an OPPE, a bunch of training, ripping apart the engines and slapping them back together, bilge-diving, chipping and painting and wiping the oil off of the engines continuously. I remember going to the Bahamas, Bermuda, Ft Lauderdale and NY (my hometown) for fleet week in '86. I had Capts Broadfield, Mueller and Little. They called Broadfield, Capt BeNo, as in, there will 'be no' liberty and we'll had alot of fast cruises. Mueller was pretty quiet and played tennis alot on base and Little was a decent guy that tried to talk me into re-enlisting, which did not appeal to me after 4 years in the Pit. Overall, I was proud of my service, got and honorable discharge and good conduct medal and moved back to NY. Engineering (especially M-Div) was the backbone of the Holland and I tip my hat to all of you!!! All the best to you guys and gals!!! ![]() ![]() ![]()

Comments: Had a really fine time there, went to the Bahamas, Coco Beach, drank alot and met a whole mess of great people and went to my only Captains Mass onboard...what a bummer. Lost my E4 as a result of that...
Comments: USS Holland was by far the greatest adventure of a lifetime. Met the most amazing people hands down!
Comments: Hey
Comments: First command. The best time I had and the most memories I can remember. Totally change may life. By the way, does anyone know EN1 James Bonner? And to all the crew-members I served with I say hello. I don't think I ever found a closer nit family as I did there. Thank you for all my lifes experiences.
Comments: Anybody else that was in the Crane Crew at the same time. Contact me @ my e-mail Anybody else remember "Bert's Tavern"
Comments: Hi shipmates!!! I need your help in finding someone who assaulted me while station abroad the Holland. hi name was john ? he was in repair dept.? a petty offer 2or 3 class? He lived out in town with two roommates that were dating... I was drudged at wet willies, and the female roommate drove me and my friend Kelly to their house. they carried me to the sofa...in the middle of the night john came out and took me to his bed room while i was unable to move or scream do to the drug. I remember his roommate ( a mixed guy 2nd class was in the nuclear dept. I had told him about what happen later I know your out their please contact me!) came to see why I was in john's room in which john told him i walk in my self, not true. he had his way with me and in the morning I awoke to find my underwear on backwards...well you know what happen. so I left to go to the hotel where me and my boyfriend at the time TM2 Brian walker had, like every weekend enjoined. All i know is he was kicked out the navy the summer of 1994 for what I'm not sure...please help me put a end to that sad part of my life 17 years ago....help a shipmate heal her soul.
Comments: Does anyone have a contact for Christian Miller? Served as a radioman around 1991-1994?
Comments: She was a good ship with a solid crew. We worked hard and played hard too. I still have contact with several Weapons Department friends that date back to the mid 1960's. I can remember being in the English Channel on the wrong side of a shipping channel. Somehow navigation had a slight hickup! That was the only time as helmsman, I ever got a HARD rudder command that I can recall... I also remember coming across the Bay of Biscay in the winter on the way back to Charleston when she started to come apart at the missile deck. Scary watching that crack open and close with the waves.... And, with the broken USN horseraddish cases in the food lockers, it took guys with OBA's to clean up that mess! How did I have pier watch in Rota, then back in Rota again in 1969, and missed both times the USO girls came aboard for a performance! Such was life....
Comments: Hello shipmates, keep in touch for alot of us the Holland was the beginning of our lives.
Comments: Those on board remember my for a major malfunction of the port missle crane.(Rota) I was being re qualified went down with a polaris missle on the hook. It went back down the tube on the missle plug area. What a day!!!
Comments: If anyone was in the Supply dept during my duty time aboard the Holland. Send me an e-mail
Comments: I very much enjoyed the time I spent onbloard the Holland. Fish & Chips at the little hole in the wall around the corner from the bar downtown. I worked a lot of crazy hour fixing boats. I made some fantastic friends and great people while in Scotland.
Comments: the best time in my life was spent on board the Holland, the day my wife and I were married on board March 17th 1978. Captain Wigley attended as did Chaplain Marvyn. Had great workmates and have been back to Dunoon only once and that was 4 years ago to show my daughter where she was born and raised. I spend many vacations in my wife's home town Ayr will be there for Christmas and New year this year will be our first Christmas in Scotland since we came to the states, long long time ago. I would like to hear from ANYONE who was on board at the same time and who may even remember the wedding. Till then may God bless you for everything you did, and may He continue to shower you with His many blessings. Cody and Lyn Gwynn. Roy Utah. ![]() |
