I AM A SHELLBACK Where you part of the 1996 Decom Crew ? no Department / Division / Shop : admin/CAAC Comments: I was the first enlisted female to serve (temporary duty cause I terminated my shore duty in Groton CT) on board USS Holland while she was still in the yards for refit to take on women. I served almost 3 months before going to VA for shipboard training and was in the first group of 25 women to join Holland on 1/27/1983, Capt J.R. Wilson was the commanding officer and I was the first female to reenlist onboard the USS HOLLAND (AS-32). Capt D.E.Broadfield took over command on 3/7/1983. We did sea trials in GITMO (lol don't go up that hill and no hot water) and returned for reloading then off to the Indian Ocean. The Rock of Gibraltar, Palma (shore patrol :)), International date line (5/31/83) the cease fire passing the East West Banks, Diego Garcia (6/3-9/1), (port/starboard liberty, base liquor store off limits, liberty boats), Perth (9/4), 40 ft seas after leaving Perth, Panama Canal and back to South Carolina. USS Holland was the first tender to cross the international date line and initiate women as shellbacks. Lots of props and garbage went missing (overboard) the night before but the initiation was still memorable (to say the least). Many women were transformed from pollywogs, passing the test of seaworthiness and becoming full fledged shellbacks, making Holland history that day. I am forever grateful for all the wonderful opportunities I was able to embrace as a member of the Holland crew. I literally cried when I heard my ship was decommissioned. Does anyone know of a IO cruise book or where any pictures may be available?

No Department / Division / Shop : Repair , 3rd division Comments: It’s very interesting to look back and see all the information and the photos of the Holy Lock Scotland site and it’s exactly how I remember it, I’m interested in the different types of membership options and very interested in signing the logbook and trying to recognize some of the names I was familiar with while serving there,,, A lot of working experience memories and so forth and the experience of helping to save a Scottish fairyboat the Waverley After it must have got off course somewhat and lots of self up on the roof and punctured a hole and I was among the team that went to it to help save it from sinking or the possibility of it happening
