Finished tour in Charleston while ship in yard for refit of missile crane/cranes. Was not complete when service time completed, so did not see the twin cranes that were to be installed. Completed last three months on Shore Patrol, Charleston. That too, was quite an experience.

United States, No Department / Division / Shop : R4 Division/Antenna Shop Comments: I spent 3 years and 4 months in the Navy after receiving my draft notice into the Army and enlisting in the USN. I initially signed up for 3 years, but extended my enlistment 4 months in order to get "A" school (Basic Electronics) at Treasure Island. My first tour was at China Lake, CA Naval Weapons Center followed by the USS Holland (AS32). We spent 6 months in the yards for a boat and missile crane refit. I was part of a team that serviced the sub's sonar inside the ballast tanks during their drydock service. Also was trained on the AN/BRA-8 Antenna (buoy) and part of that team. Would love to hear from some of those men I worked/partied with back then. One of those guys, Tom was my best man at my wedding 10 months after my honorable discharge in February 1969. My wife and I recently celebrated our 50th Wedding Anniversary.

No Department / Division / Shop : Op/Nav PAO Comments: I was the first journalist (JO) to serve onboard Holland. Walked up the stern brow on a windy rainy night arriving about 0200 19 APR 75 in the Bremerton Navy Shipyard. That was an amazing time to say the least for all onboard at that time. I enjoyed my time onboard working in Navigation Dept full time until arriving in Scotland and then got to run the CCTV, edit the monthly newsletter “The Flying Dutchman.” Spent a year as a hard hat permanent shore patrolman Aug 76-Agu 77. Mad a lot of friends, married a girl from Glasgow. Still have three adult children and six grandchildren living in Scotland. I miss my friends in a Dunoon and those I met in the mid 80s at Edzell. No Department / Division / Shop : W-4 Navigation Repair Shop - NavAids Comments: I with two other sailors built the half hull model of the Holland at the Ingalls Shipyard in Pascagoula, designed the Ships Plaque, went from Seaman to Electronics Technician first class aboard the Holland. Left the Holland in Rota upon being selected for the NESEP in 1966. The caliber of the men I worked with on the Holland led me to make the Navy my 25-year career. I retired in 1985 as a mustang Lt. Cdr. Holland was my first ship and I feel a deep affection for her.

Fantail, on the pitch would see only water deck to overhead,next time just air and screws would come out of water. Bang like hell on reentering water. Boots were puking on up roll and getting hit on the down roll. Had good Tim’s but 3 section duty sucked. |
