I received transfer orders on the approach to the Cooper River in Charleston. One shipmate told me, "We should learn to speak Irish Gaelic," and I've lost track of him, but I did learn Gaeilge (for that's how it's spelled in Irish). Still don't know why - my family was from Scotland!

I was there for 3 months in Diego Garcia and the ship was heading for Charleston SC... We stopped at Perth Australia for a few days and headed for the Panama Canal. During this time I became a Shellback along with others. I heard there was a video of it. I never got to see it. I would like to see it. Maybe on YouTube lol 😆. We went thru the Panama Canal and also stopped there for half a day. The ship went to Charleston SC and then to Goosecreek SC.
