This brought back some great memories from my short tenure onboard this great ship.  Rota, Spain was terrific as well.  I would love to be able to find out where I might get a good quality photo of the USS Holland.  Thanks for the memories!!

I was happy to have had the chance to be a part of the USS Holland (AS-32) crew, though it was a short period of time.  I really don't have a lot of memories, as alot of you probably do, it was just another 9-5 boring job to me.  But, I was a crewmember and proud of it.  Was thrilled to have made a world cruise - not many folks can say they have been around the world.  Unfortunately, the CO at the time, Capt Broadfield (aka Capt BeNo) didn't allow us to really SEE the world.  I loved what I saw - and will always cherish the liberty time I had while there.  Through facebook, I have been able to re-connect with some shipmates.  May the Holland always live within our hearts.

Comments:
Looking back, this was one of the best times of my life. I remember all the subtle nuances of living aboard the Holland: the red sleeping lights at night, playing hearts, lying on the top deck at night on the way to Spain looking at the incredible, endless stars. I remember the intriguing smells of Spain as we moored in the bay the first night, the drunken nights at the EM Club and learning to play golf on the weekends at Rota. Most of all, I remember and miss so many shipmates I took for granted in those days. Those memories can never be replaced, duplicated or matched. I would especially love to hear from Jim 'Red' Brown (YN3), Robert Graeme III (PN3) and Commander Aiken. He was my first hero - and probably still the greatest one. If anyone remembers me, please call me at (704) 528-3308, or email me at johnstjohn44@hotmail.com. Time is running out...

I had much fun at all the little dance clubs their. All the rain and even when we had the biggest snow storm dunoon had ever seen in 1980. Love talking the ferry's over to grenoch and taking the train to Glasgow. Then sleeping on the train so you don't miss your boat. Good times. I learned how to play darts in Scotland.

Comments:
Was scared to death when I arrived to my first ship. Messed cook for 4 months and made E-3 on the decks. finally went to W-1 div. TMC Ron White was my div. chief. Worked hard and played hard. Qualified on all aspects of torpedo handling including boat talker. We did a lot of torpedo handling. Brought the Holland back to Charleston in Dec. '73. the Simon Lake relieved us. During the turn over we were handling our last missile moving it to the sub. The large missile crane broke and dropped the missile back into the silo on the Holland. Scared the beJesue out of me. I just knew we were not going to Charleston. EOD came in safed the missile. it was shored up inside the silo so it wouldn't move and we left on time two days later. After arriving in Charleston we were moving a MK 37 torpedo to a boat and was pulling it out of the mag. Between the magazine and the 37 shop the air operated hoist snapped a link on the chain and the weapon free fell back into the mag. Asses and elbows were flying. Again no explosion but some hurt egos. Also that same week the torpedo crane was lowering the camel down so that subs could tie up and that crane broke and dropped the camel to the bottom of the river. By this time I was ready to leave which I did three months later to Orlando for MK 48 school. I would never trade this experience for anything else. Learned a lot, great shipmates, loved Rota, Spain.
