PRIOR TO THE HOLLAND I WAS ON THE HOWARD W GILMORE IT WAS IN CHARLESTON SC.THEN I WENT ON THE HOLLAND AT CHARLESTON SC WHEN COMMISSIONED WENT TO HOLY LOCH TO
LEARN TO OPERATE THE BOAT AND MISSLE CRANE WHICH WAS MY DUTY WHEN I WAS IN ROTA SPAIN. M&A DIV.  CRANE GANG WE HAD OUR SHOP IN THE STEERING GEAR ROOM. THEN CAME BACK TO CHARLESTON SC TO BE DISCHARGED. ALL WAS A GOOD EXPERENCE FOR ME MET A LOT OF NICE GUY'S I HAVE A LOT OF MEMORIES I HAVE HAD CONTACT WITH 3 OF MY SHIPMATES IN THE PAST 47 YEARS WOULD LIKE TO HEAR FROM ANYONE WHO SERVED WITH ME.

Ahoy to all mates !  First ship after C School. Remembering the stormy trip with the new cranes, Amsterdam,Lisbon, the Costa Del Sol, La Guardia Civil, and "living on the economy". Great stuff.  Lots of learning about “life”, “liberty”, and the “pursuit of happiness”..     
 
Got a cruise book here somewhere, have to find it…

I HAD THE TIME OF MY YOUNG LIFE.I WAS 17 IN SPAIN WHERE I COULD DRINK AND GET DRUNK AND MEET YOUNG LADYS OF SPAIN. I REMBER GETING DRUNK ONE NIGHT AND FALLING OFF THE PIER,AND THE SHIP,THE BOATS AROUND US AND THE BASE ALL HAD TO WAKE UP BECAUSE OF ME. I JUST WANT TO SORRY GUYS. AND WOULD LIKE TO HEAR FROM ANY ONE WHO WAS ONBOARD 63/64  AL MURPHY

I think of my time as a wonderful advantage to me personally.  I was challenged by both the work and the schedule.  Today I think if this as an opportunity for personal growth, sometimes during the opportunity I wasn't to sure.  Great Liberty!!!!!!

Just discovered this site.  Spent my entire Navy career of 4 years on the Holland.  Loved Rota and Charleston.  Really enjoyed the trip through the Panama Canal going to Bremerton.  Always was on the docks in supply.  Remember fondly (?) driving the van in Rota to the gates to pick up the drunks.
