Comments: Great to see this site and take a walk down memory lane. I checked on board in time for Hugo and checked off right after Typhoon Omar. Went to Bahamas, Halifax, Port Canaveral and to sea a lot the first two years on-board. Went in yards twice before riding the Holland to Guam. Had a scary experience in Columbia then a great time in Hawaii. The steel beach picnics were a great distraction and the sunbathing on the 04 level was fun with crazy people all around. Loved showing the Colombian special forces guys around the ship. They seemed happy to visit the bakery when the hot dinner rolls came out of the oven. Loved help making pizza on Fridays while out at sea. It was so much fun with MSC Margaret Mason leading the way. (Aerobics on the helo deck with Margaret the mangler). Thank you to all the wonderful folks that took the time to help get all my quals completed. I never could have done it by myself. Rest in peace Margaret Mason, my dear shipmate that made everyones world on the Holland a better place. You always made me laugh when life was tough on board. Petty officer Pierce, I want to know if you are still playing your music and playing practical jokes. Quarter deck watches wouldn't be the same without a clown on watch. Lt Morawic and Senior Chief Spann, thank you for helping us all with our warfare quals. God Bless you all!!
Comments: I had a lot of good times on the Holland. One of the best NDT labs I've been stationed at.
Comments: I would love to hear from Lee Martinez. Lee, if you see this message, get in contact with me.

Comments: I was on board the USS Holland during it's final years of her life. Milestones during this 6 year period were: 1. Integrating women into the crew up to almost a 50% level. 2. Acting as an observation platform to observe SSBN test missile launches in Florida. 3. Winners of the Navy's Golden Anchor award for retention of personnel. 4. Winners of the Navy's Engineering "E" for efficiency, 2 years in a row. 5. Upgrading the Liquid Oxygen delivery systems so they could be certified and deliver O2 to Submarines alongside. 6. Preliminary efforts to upgrade the helo deck to support a Harrier Jet. 7. Speed trails after Shipyard upgrades that allowed the ship to exceed it's New Commissioning speed runs. 9. Attending New York City's "Fleet Week" festivities as part of the USS Forestall task force in 1989. These are just some of this exciting Ship's events in her final years. All accomplished by a magnificent group of Men and Women that I was proud to serve with.
Comments: Does anyone have copies of any awards we recieved during my assignment time period?
Comments: Worked in the Radio Shack for three years. Remember Lt. Watkinson, Chief Gibbs, Stanley Clark, RM1, Patrick Smith RM1
Comments: I would like to convey a heart felt 'Thank You' to all the men & women I served with while onboard the Holland. So many good times, so many successes we shared. In Deck Division, we worked hard and played harder Despite our diverse social factions, and Drama worthy of a lost Greek tragedy; when it counted we always had each others back. I miss 'drinking to the foam' and hitting the gym with you guys. You all live on through my many 'sea stories'. May the best of your todays be the worst of your tomorrows. I often miss that deck lounge, nobody did it like us! You are not forgotten. Warm Regards, 'Stephens'

Comments: I remember the long work hours repairing the subs. I also remember the rough return cruise from Plymouth. I would like to get in touch with other guys from the motor rewind/sound shop/ic gyro/ and rubber and plastics shops from my era. Names I remember - Steve Egan, Dave Holt, John Root, Gil Larkin, Tom Meldrum, Joe Knobber, Mark Gillespy, Nate Mandering, Eddie Perry, and " Arnie ". I was diagnosed with stage 3 papillary thyroid cancer in 1990 - a type of cancer caused by exposure to ionizing radiation. My diagnosing doctor placed the start of my tumor growth in 1978. My time onboard the U.S.S.Holland is the only time I`ve ever worked around radation hazards. This has left me a puzzle. Has anyone else had a similar experience? |
