I was watching the Army Navy game on Dec. 10th & decided to look for the Holland on the internet & found this site. The Holland was the best duty station I had while in the Navy & I was happy to see she had earned the awards she did.
I have told my wife how much I enjoyed being in Spain & we were in Barcelona in Jan. She enjoyed the area so much we are going back in Oct. of 2012. We won't get to the Rota area but will have 3 days in Costa Del Sol as well as 1 day in Granada.
I would like to hear from anyone who served during the time I was on the Holland from Oct. 1959- Apr. 1971.

Department / Division / Shop : Subsafe Office - Repair Division Under LT. Morgan.

Comments:
I absolutely love working on the USS Holland and in particular, working for Lt. Morgan and Chief Clyde Cox and Chief Poper in the SubSafe office. Lt. Morgan was a mustanger, a great guy. In the short 5 months I was on board, I got to travel all over southern Spain. Chief Cox was the best ... a really great Sr. Chief. When I went home on emergency leave, I had recently ordered an engagement ring from the Navy Exchange and then had to leave in a hurry. I left the money for payment with Chief Cox and he sent the ring, and change, to me in RI. What a great guy.
It was a great ship with a great crew. Good friends were Tom Ainscough, Pete Gevorkian, Tom Maas and Rich Weppleman. After I left and my mother passed away, I wound up assigned to Antarctic Support Activities, Task Force 43 and made two trips to Antarctica. Imagine a black shoe electrician working with SeaBeas. It was interesting and an experience of a lifetime. But I will always cherish the time I spent on the Holland. Great ship with a great crew and a great mission.
God Bless,

Rick

What a great experience for a civilian.  After a couple of months on board everyone realized I was not a "tech rep" and accepted me as a "shipmate." With no prior active duty experience, the first time I was called shipmate is probably one of my most cherished moments of my life. Almost 27 years later I still cherish those days.

I first reported to the Holland while it was in Dry dock in Charlestons, S.C. , in 1968. Then we went on to Rota, after a brief visit to Gitmo. That was a long time ago. If memory serves me well, the Navigational Repair shop was W5 Division. But I am not 100% sure :-)

Comments:
First duty out of A school. Fortunate to get this duty as many were sent to Vietnam. Lot of good guys in the supply department. A lot of work, especially when the supply ships came in once a month to keep the boats supplied. At the time the boomer's were the highest priority of security for the U. S.
Was able to travel a good bit on weekends to experience Spain. Many good times, especially in Torremolinos.
As was posted by another sailer (Charles Penix) the north Atlantic storm in March 69 was nasty. I remember many times that I thought it might not right itself. Many of the long duty sailers said it was the worst they had ever experienced. Any guys from the old department, say hi sometime. A good life experience.
