Trips to trafalgar beach and T-Town were also lots of fun. Best friends were Randy Adams, Ted Culbertson, Tim McMahon, and many more whose names my old feeble mind can't remember. Would like to hear from y'all. Jimmy (Tennessee)

Rota Are you a USS Holland AS-32 Plank-Owner ? no A USS Holland AS-32 ShellBack ? no Where you part of the 1996 Decom Crew ? no Department / Division / Shop : ops/Radio shack Comments: I arrived in Holland from radio "c" school along with my friend Rmsn Mack Bailey. As we were both E-3 at the time, we went directly to the mess decks. Mack went to breakout and I went to the spud locker for a while, then to the mess decks supervised by M.A. MM2 Jack Curlin. All this occurred in Feb. '70. Three months later, we were old hands at Rota rootin', Tokyo bar, Sunya bar, calamari, fried chicken, San Miguel by the gross, and any other diversion we could think of. Girls came to Rota from all over the world to work in bars that were full every night. My closest friends were Bailey, Richard Pizzoni Ft3, David Faulkner and Richard Schauss who worked Radcon, Jack Curlin, Mike Lozen. Rm1, the guys on the ops div. Softball team and football team. I would like to contact CWO3 Bill Waters, RMCS Charlie Snyder, RMC Gale Hastings, RM1 Stan Clark, RM1 Jerry Burghout, RM1 John Burton, RM3 Mike Montgomery, and RM2 Dale Foster if any of you see this entry. We didn't have as much fun during the Viet Nam years as Holland sailors coming after appear to have, and we damn sure didn't get any pats on the back or attaboy awards, but we did the job well every day in Radio and every other division. Long Hours, Low Pay, Haze Gray, Underway. (Once in a While). I worked wth exceptional people and am proud of our service, even if the Public we served then would rather we were not seen or heard from. When we separated in March '73 in Charleston, Bailey and I were both RM2, married, and supervisors of our own radio watch sections. I should have states, but the climate was better suited to civlant that year. My greatest regret. Best wishes to all Holland Sailors, Chiefs, Warrants, Officers and MarDet.

No. Department / Division / Shop : Repair / R-9 / 31F, 10M, 31D Comments: After two submarines, the USS Holland was a succinct introduction to the surface Navy: Bells (telling time and liberty launches), DCC, JOOD, Flying Squadron, deck terms (e.g., rat guard, pelican hook, wildcat, bullnose, gypsy head), and food choices (e.g., mainline, speedline, salad bar). But it wasn't all strict adherence to uniform decorum and protocol.
