Comments:

Best duty was in Scotland. Capt. Lawrence WIGLEY was great. Capt. Bump was new to the command. We worked hard and played hard. I especially enjoyed the Scottish people. I had a few friends in the MARDET, and USS Los Alamos, AFDB-7. Shout out to ET3 Polly, Lcpl "Dez" of the Holland.

SUBRON-14 was awesome. I was a Data Process Technician (DP), now called IT, with a Crypto clearance. Most people didn't know I was also a Navy Damage Controlman (FN), FNSN when I came aboard. By the time I left the Holland, I was a DP3, completed my DP2 qualifications, and Military Leadership 1&C. I was promoted to DP2 upon transfer to NAS Alameda.

Contact me through:  Holy Loch Dunoon Scotland Submarine Refit Site One.

I was aboard from 1966-1969. Our overhaul began in late 1968 and lasted until March 1969, when we went for sea trials in Gitmo, Cuba. We then sailed to Rota, via Lisbon and Amsterdam. In the storm crossing the Atlantic, we rolled 47 degrees. All who were aboard will surely remember that. Good duty. Good technical job.

Comments:

I signed up as a "2x6 Reserve" in my senior year of high school in 1975. I spent the summer at RTC Glakes. I was undesignated, so I had to spend an extra two weeks in 'Boot Camp Lite' on the Main Base. There, we learned a little about shipboard safety and saw scary movies about such dangers as a line parting - which can whip around and cut a man in half, and the infamous Forrestal Fire. At the end came 'Orders Day' when everyone in our unit heard where he would be going: That was when I learned the Navy had a ship named 'the USS Holland' berthed in Charleston, SC.

Shortly after my arrival, I learned we would be sailing (steaming? dieseling?) to Scotland in 6 weeks to relieve the USS Canopus. The crossing took 12 days. We pulled into Holy Loch at dawn on Nov 6 (?) and were met a couple miles out by tug boats spraying great high plumes of water from their firehoses. As we got closer to the Canopus, we could see on the fantail there was a band of about a dozen pipers in full dress kit. It was a pretty cool welcoming party.
