I remember complaining of sore knees (mainly from going up and down the ladder wells carrying heavy mail bags. I remember Keith Cave, Bart Thompson and Frank Hall, who was a PC1 at the time. IMHO he was a great boss.

Schooled by Martin Merrietta ( system contractor) on the BST-1 emergency buoy system aboard the Subs. Cruised to Bahamas, Bermuda, Ft. Lauderdale, Cape Canaverelle, Baltimore, and New York City. Lot of great memories and experiences on that 599’ of haze grey steel.

YES...Detached in late Sept 1996 at BREMERTON, WA due to new orders to: NAS-Whidbey Island, WA Department / Division / Shop : Chaplain Division- Command Chaplain 11 sailors in division Comments: It was my first Division assignment, came from prior Joint Military assignments across the USA, with USN-US Army at WSMR- NM, and 2d MARDIV/ FMF worldwide USMC assignments 2/4 2/6 to meet USS HOLLAND anchored in Yokuska, Japan prior to a Singapore deployment - that was diverted to Chinhae' South Korea for Z mission repair. CAPT WINNEY was CO throughout my years before DECOM, however we had two different XO's. The CMC Thomas _____ was a very good CMC. We had the largest number of Women sailors -at that time, than any ship in the Navy! Very interesting deployment schedule. Deployed every one, or two months for Sub or Z Ship work- Yakuska 5x, Sasabo 2x, Hong Kong 2x, Darwin, Australia 1x. That was where we had HOLLAND sailor Basketball team beat the AUSTRALIAN National Team in a close tournament. Australian American Association did a Visit Aussie Towns and ranches program over a few days all over the Northern Territories. I believe we had five shipmates married Australians in the months following that deployment. USS HOLLAND was the third USN Ship to return to Manila, PI - after closure of all USA Military Bases. We we did a HUMREL program in Passig City. Our JO1 and JO3 got wire service stories printed. I met a lot of wonderful people throughout those two years on USS HOLLAND. My chaplains and staff participated in 71 marriages while we were stationed at Apra GUAM. I remember LT Ben Aycock, and LT Ken Lewis were my deputies on HOLLAND. RP's RP1 Robinson, RP2 Wey, RP3 Guerrero, and we had four additional strikers for rate came from different divisions. It was quite a memorable two years. Hard to believe so much time has passed. There were many faces I recall. While working with PACFLEET I would run into sailors from HOLLAND. I swam my last PT Test in Apra Bay. Met a number of sailors from USS HOLLAND during my assignments all around the world: Five GWOT deployments : AFRICA, 5th FLEET HQ, USCENTCOM, Pakistan, and Afghanistan 2x. Served with FMF and last combat deployment was with SEAL TEAM 2 in AFG in 2012. Does anyone remember, HOLLAND's TYPHOON Deployments? HOLLAND at Hong Kong? Philippine deployment? I last saw USS HOLLAND out from Bremerton, WA in the fall of 2000 out in the bay. She was a good ship that traveled a lot throughout is service. I did do a short deployment on the USNS COMFORT, but that was during the HAITIAN deployment with FMF Marines in 1984 in Jamaica SEA SIGAL OPERATIONS. It was interesting but HOLLAND was an overseas adventure. I retired after thirty years of service around the world and the USA.
