I was the repair parts supply petty officer for R3 division. I came aboard when I was 22 yrs old served in the bake shop before being assigned to the rewind shop. The Holland was awarded the battenberg cup two battle E awards as well as meritorious unit of accommodation.

Worked around the clock often due to shifts, trainings, drills, etc. It was not unusual to have liberty canceled bc equipment was down and needed to be repaired. I rarely saw a messdeck movie and could never scrap all the carbon off my hands from cleaning exhaust manifolds, etc. I had a Snipe tan! I served under 'Be-no'Broadfield liberty, Mueller and Little. No Department / Division / Shop : R-5, Radiac Calibration Comments: My first ship. Reported aboard Feb 28th, 1975 Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. Used to play bagpipes on the weather decks on the passage from PSNS to San Diego. Left in '77 and transferred to the USS Glover (AGFF-1). After three months on the Glover EPMAC requested I transfer to the Gilmore (AS-16) in La Maddalena Sardinia. La Madd turned out to be an outstanding duty station. Released in 1981 I was recalled to active duty for four years 85 - 89. Last duty station was the USS Duncan (FFG-10), Leading ET, ET1(SW). Like many other ship mates, I accomplished more than a few things that should have distinguished me in my career - and like many of my ship mates I never got a g-d damned thing. But it all started with the Holland - she was a great ship.

Captain Little was the best CO I ever served under and Commander Ralston was the biggest DICK I ever had for an XO at any command. Met a lot of good people too though: LCDR Tony Paez (passed away in August of 2020), Chief Jerry Jordan, EM2 Jim Altimus, HT2 Jeff Adams, Barry Jones, Julie Lessard, Norman Jones, Michael Carr, SK1 Teresa Burnett. I did learn a lot about persistence and commitment on the old girl though and she was a good ship. Much of what I learned has been of great benefit to me in building my own successful law firm over the past 24 years and for that I’m grateful. Duties involved mostly preparations for, implementing and recording results of Captain's Mast and Court Martials including verbatim recording and transcribing. I was part of the pre-commissioning detail at Norfolk, VA teaching UCMJ and maintaining records. When Holland arrived in Charleston, the Norfolk detail closed down and we reported aboard for duty. I witnessed commissioning and am listed in the commissioning pamphlet. I was selected for the Navy Enlisted Scientific Education Program (NESEP) and departed Holland a few months after arrival in Rota.

I had some good shipmates in the sheet metal shop, carpenter shop, machine shop and ship-fitter shop. Had wonderful times in all the surrounding towns and beaches. It was an exciting time. I really loved my tour on the Holland. I cross-decked to the Simon Lake, went to Port Dept. on the harbor tugs and finally left Rota in 1977. I went to the Hunley in Charleston and sailed with her to Guam and worked on some of the same boats there.
